GU Recruit: Ramon Smith G 6-3 jr.

It's taken quite a while -- that's what happens when you replace two-thirds of your team -- but here's the final bio on the 7-member Gannon recruiting class. (Note: Another signing could be made later this summer; if it happens we'll hop back onto Google and look for info on that guy, too.)

I tried uncovering as much info as I could on Ramon Smith, but that's hard to do with a guy named "Smith." For example, he's from the Virginia area and dang was I excited to see that Ramon Smith was named Washington Post All-Met honorable mention in 2006. The first team for that squad included Kevin Durant (Texas/NBA), Austin Freeman (Georgetown), Greivis Vasquez (Maryland/NBA), and Darryl Webb (IUP). But that Ramon Smith was from St. Stephen's/St. Agnes High School, not Patterson High School like Gannon's Ramon Smith. So, he's not that guy, but thank goodness he's not THIS Ramon Smith.

Here's what I could come up with on the real Ramon Smith, much of the data thanks to Gannon's Super SID Dan Teliski:

* Transferred from Frederick (Md.) Community College, where he led the Cougars to their first-ever regional title
* Named to the NJCAA Region XX Division I All-Tournament team after registering 19 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists in the regional championship game. Here's the article from that contest.
* Here's his bio from FCC. Rather underwhelming from an information perspective, eh?
* I'm not sure who Frederick is playing in this photo of Smith, but holy moly is that a huge arena.

  2. Beth: Very interesting stuff ... on several levels. I looked online and the guy who goes by the name of Mr. Walks Like Jordan is Dwayne Soders. He played at Kilgore JC in Texas (an elite juco) and is also the CEO of DLS Management, a marketing and management firm for urban artists in the midwest. I checked out his Twitter feed and didn't see anything about Gannon or a current basketball team/school. Thanks for the tidbit. If you could get more details from him, that would be great.

  3. jim- the profile picture he posted today is a kid in a kilgore uniform...i'll keep an eye on it!

  4. In case the yet-to-be announced new player IS Dwayne Soders, I thought a little Internet research was in order. I could only find evidence that Soders played at Kilgore in 2008-2009, where he was listed as a sophomore.

Another site dated 2008 showed him as a signee from a Fort Worth high school to McLennan CC to Kilgore JC, whatever that means. Does that mean he graduated in 2007, went to McLennan for a year (can't find any evidence of that), then to Kilgore for 2008-09? Hard to say. Kilgore's website does NOT list him on their roster for 2009-10.

What is a little troubling is that it doesn't look like Soders played ANYWHERE in 2009-10. If he DID play somewhere, their Sports Information Department and website provider could use some work.

I don't like hearing that GU is bringing in guys that didn't play anywhere the previous season. IMO, that sounds a little like we're picking off the scrap heap, almost like the Swann pickup last season.

I also found that Soders may have at least 2 different Facebook pages, one including his actual name and one that Beth quoted that did not use his actual name, instead titling it "MRFORTWORTH MRWALKSLIKEJORDAN". The hyperbole there almost defies description. If he IS coming to Erie, it should be interesting to see how his act plays in Erie. I'm not sure he's ready for Erie, either. Interesting.

  5. Soders graduated from Western Hills then went to McLennan CC and then transferred to Kilgore JC. He did not attend school last year so, no, he did not play basketball at all last year.

He will be a junior at Gannon in the fall, should it work out that he comes to Gannon.

  6. Gannon74: In my opinion, the signing of Dwayne Soders could be the GREATEST thing to happen to Gannon basketball since Lou Tullio coached the Golden Ones! In your Internet research, did you come across www.DLSmanagementonline.com? That's the home page for DLS management whose CEO is Dwayne Soders "Mr. Walk Like Jordan." Check out the music video on that page. I guarantee you'll be shimmying to it.

Dwayne could make a MAJOR impact on the team immediately. Game #1, he could upgrade the Knights' warmup music -- maybe even install a Jumbotron which could have a choreographed music video of the team dancing in their hi-tops.

What if he could turn Tanner Furno into a much taller, curly-haired version of Justin Beiber? Think of the national attention that would bring to the program! Plus thousands of teenage girls would come to the games just to scream for Tanner.

And please note that my man Dwayne only claims to WALK like Jordan, not run, jump, shoot, defend, sit, or chew gum like him. And maybe he means Jordan Staal of the Penguins. No matter how you look at it, the guy would be entertaining.

Seriously, just because Soders didn't play somewhere the year before doesn't instantly mean he's scrap heap material. Take Edinboro's Byron Knight for example, who in his 7 years between Penn Hills and EUP attended two schools but never played there. He was named all-PSAC West first team last year.

  7. Also, I'm sure Ramon Smith is reading our comments and saying to himself, "Hello! I actually signed with the team! How about showing me a little love?"

  8. I highly doubt that Ramon Smith could care what those of us hanging around this blog think about his joining GU this season.

But, in comparing Smith's approach to coming here, which appears to be keeping his mouth shut, his private life private, showing up in August, and playing ball, to MR WALKS LIKE JORDAN, I sure like Smith's approach better.

When approaching a new situation, there's an old saying that goes, "Under-promise, then over-deliver." MR WALKS LIKE JORDAN could sure learn something from that old adage. I know, my old school roots are showing. Sorry.

While it's true that Soders' year off may not guarantee that he fails at GU (IF he comes here and IF he stays here, time will tell), his history isn't exactly encouraging. Like Larry Swann, he was at 2 different JC's in 2 years. Then, he apparently wasn't recruited (or didn't accept any offers)by any 4 year school, despite the abundance of schools that you'd think would be in the market for a talented, rugged 6'6" forward. You'd have to agree that's a little disconcerting, wouldn't you? One would think that if he were some semblance of a decent player, he'd have been playing SOMEWHERE.

That's the difference between Knight and Soders. Size. Teams are usually willing to take a chance on a big man (if there aren't any good reasons that a coach wouldn't want to have him on the team. One would wonder what all those coaches in the Southwest USA know that Coach Reilly does not), while small guards are often overlooked.

No, I didn't research Soders' off-court life at all (although I noticed that he has "friended" many of last year's GU players, including some that won't be here next season), so I can't comment on DLSmanagementonline.com. However, if he is at GU in September, I can't see him having time to handle that, basketball, and his studies, too.

By the way, what city do you think Soders is referring to when he speaks of "P-town"? Does he think Erie is part of Philadelphia? Or Pittsburgh? Certainly glad he's not going to be a geography major.

    ReplyDelete
  9. "P-Town" refers to Pennsylvania. Don't ask me how or why it does, but I've seen different things on TV before with different athletes referring to PA as "P-Town". This inclues one Kobe Bryant who once said "I owe it all to the people of 'P-Town" who helped bring the best out of me". Then when asked what P-Town was, he replied "Pennslvania, that's the spot!".

Also, just realized in Soders' bio on Facebook, it says "3YEAR OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL. COMING TO GANNON UNIVERSITY TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP RING AND GRADUATE WITH A BACHELORS IN BUSINESS, THEN PURSUING A MASTER'S".

So... is he saying he HAS 3 years of eligibility (making him athletically a sophomore) OR that he has 3 years of college basketball ALREADY PLAYED and will be a senior in Business??

    Time will tell Gannon friends...

    ReplyDelete
  10. well, he's added more info to his profile.

    College
    Gannon University '10
    Baskeball
    Business Administration
    Journalism/Communications

    McClennan Community College '07
    Basketball

    Kilgore College '08
    Basketball

    Tarrant County College '
    Associates

    High School
    Western Hills High School '07

so if he graduated 07 and was on track with everything he'd be a senior...we might actually be getting this kid!

  11. This is the type of player Reilly is recruiting now? Some self-aggrandizing kid who has done nothing on a basketball court to merit a full scholarship. If this guy is getting a full ride and Steve P isn't, Reilly should be fired.

Judging by his Twitter account, I don't know if communications will be the best major for him...
"SO SOMEBODY DECIDED TO BREAK IN MY HOUSE STILL OUR BIG SCREEN OUR LAWNMOORE AND MY LABTOP WTF IS REALLY GOOD TOOK ALL MY CASH I'M HOT!!"
And also judging by his posts, I don't think he quite knows Gannon is DII...
"FINALY IM GOING BACK TO PLAY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND THIS TIME IM ON ESPN LOOK OUT FOR YOU R ONE AND ONLY MR WALK LIKE JORAN IMA BEAST"

Clearly the reason he is adding all of these new Gannon people on his facebook account is to build up a network of contacts so that he can further his promoter work. Will he really be focused on playing basketball or the parties he intends to throw after the games?

What a joke this program is becoming.

  12. did you ever see half the pages on facebook or Twitter? If we went by those for everyone, no one would have any credibility. The fact that everyone is taking online social networks serious to get a bio on a recruit is really funny.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes -- let's all stop being Captain Crabby Pants about these kids. Please take a few minutes to read the Malcom Woodbury story I just posted. It will make you feel much better -- guaranteed.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well when a kid throws incoherent garbage online for the world to see, what reaction should someone take from that? Maybe you can't judge a book by its cover but when his(web)pages are filled with stupidity, the burden is on him to prove he is not as bad as he makes himself sound. Still not buying this guy is good for the GU program.

    ReplyDelete
  15. As I said before, my old school roots make me a little apprehensive when I see a potential player behaving in this mannner.

However, I doubt Coach Reilly is aware of Soder's social networking activity. I'm guessing that if Reilly offered him, it was because of what he saw on the court, not the Internet.

I'm a lot more concerned about the fact that Soders didn't end up at a 4 year school after Kilgore.

  16. I do not know about anyone else but I am getting the feeling some one is having a good laugh at Gannon Fans expense with this Dyayne Soders story.

  17. Bob, I've been thinking the same thng all along (You may have noticed a lot of "ifs" in my comments). This guy MAY be coming here to play, or he MAY be friends with someone who was being recruited by GU, knows that GU needs post players, and is playing a little game with GU players and fans by passing himself off as a recruit.

His style and personality certainly don't seem to match the type of player you'd think Coach Reilly is looking to recruit given the character issues that developed last year.

  18. Beth & Corey: Have you guys heard anything more about our buddy Mr. Walk Like Jordan? I'm curious what his Facebook status says now. He had an interesting comment on Twitter recently:

"SAY WHY DO COLLEGE AND OTHER PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THEY CAN HACK YO SH*T!!! WHAT HAPPEN TO PRIVACY, FREEDOM OF SPEECH, TWITTER WHAT'S GOOD?"

  19. Heard tonight on 1330 that Wendell Torres may be looking to get out of his commitment to Nyack. It has been rumored that he has contacted Coach Reilly and possibly Edinboro. Any thoughts?

  20. Its funny how people will sit up and talk about a individual they've never met to make themselves feel important! I know the kid Dwayne Soders from fort worth witch is one of the greatest players to come through fort worth ISD. He was the MVP of the district of fort worth, leading his team all the way to the semi finals in 2007. Signed with McClennan Community College where he was a very important piece of what was a great program, playing in the national junior college playoffs being recruited very highly from schools like Arkansas razor backs Nevada, Rutgers, Morehead State,MISSOURI IN THE BIG TWELVE, TCU and many other schools. His sophmore season from kilgore College where he was one of the important pieces leading them to the playoff's witch they hadn't made before he signed. he led them in field goal percentage, while leading the team in rebounds while he was 4th in scoring. Dwayne Soders decided to sit out a year to work toward his associates degree he needed to compete at the division one level. while Dwayne Soders took a year off he did a lot of community service to give back to those who helped him get to where he was and receive his accomplishments. He was called to give a speech to the chairman and board of the BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF GREATER FORT WORTH on why they shouldn't close boys and girls club's, he gave his time the entire summer coaching a AAU team of young men took them to La's Vegas and won the entire tournament! I know Dwayne Soders personally i deal with him on the every day basis he is a great individual with the heart and desire to make a difference in the up coming future! Dwayne attends church where his grand father is a pastor witch is who he stays with, he plays the drums and participates in all kind of activities in the church. I Believe it is sad how you guys will sit up and down grade a person you know nothing about. I hope you guys know that Dwayne Soders is coming to Gannon University feeling better than ever, while sitting out this summer Soders has trained with Arkansas hall of fame and NBA'S retired veteran OLIVER MILLER KNOW AS BIG O, and the Harlem Globe Trotters LARRY COLEMAN ALL SUMMER. DWAYNE SODERS IS A 6'6 ATHLETIC, VERSITLE GUARD FORWARD, HAS A TONE OF STRENGTH, AND HAS BEEN SAID TO BE ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING PLAYERS TO HIT THE FLOOR, DWAYNE BRINGS HIS GAME IN A TONE OF WAYS, HE'S A BIG TIME REBOUNDER, VERY SKILLED AND POWERFULL POST PLAYER, CAN PUT IT ON THE FLOOR, AND SHOOT THE THREE. LOOK OUT GANNON!!!! I AM DARIUS THOMAS WHEN I SAW THIS ARTICLE I HAD TO LEAVE A PIECE OF MIND!

  21. Darius-

I respect your need to defend a friend of yours.

However, with the information we had about Soders(which was limited to what could be found on the Internet, given the distance between Erie and Ft. Worth), it was hard NOT to think otherwise. For example, it's difficult to believe that an ardent church-goer would make comments similar to what we saw on his Facebook page. It was understandable to wonder why he didn't play last year and/or why no D-I team was after him. Many here still wonder whether all this was legit in the first place(and still do, frankly). Was this really a player preparing to come here or was this all a ruse? Are your comments part of a ruse? No offense, but your rant, inproper usage, and all-caps hyperbole look more like a ploy to obtain credibility for what may not be the truth.

Long time, prudent Gannon basketball fans know better than to get too caught up with anything that happens in July or August. Dorms open August 21. Classes start August 25. We'll see.
