Ignoring an adage

You know the adage "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." I'll have to ignore that today in order to talk about the Lock Haven men's basketball program. The Knights debeaked the Bald Eagles earlier tonight, 90-53, at the Hammermill Center.

How in the world does LHU coach John Wilson keep his job? In his 10 years at the school he's 52-206, a measly .202 winning percentage. I've never heard of a coach with that much tenure hovering just above the Mendoza line.

Wilson's best-ever season was 2006-2007 when LHU finished three games under .500 (12-15). That year was preceded by not one not two but three consecutive 4-23 seasons. And it was followed by a 2-24 campain* in 2007-2008. (*denotes intentional misspelling)

His road record is an amazing(ly horrendous) 16-113, just a .124 winning percentage. Four times he's won just one road game in an entire season. This year he's 0-10 in away games, putting him within striking distance of his 0-14 road mark in 2004-2005. Wilson could save the school a ton of money in gas, food, and hotels by just phoning in road games as forfeits.

But that would require him to actually talk. I sat behind the Lock Haven bench tonight, and Wilson did almost no coaching during the game. In fact from about the 13-minute mark of the second half to the final buzzer he said absolutely nothing to his team during game action. Not one "screen left", "box out", or heaven forbid "good job." Wilson should give back half of his next paycheck if not more.

I thought there might be one bright spot to the Lock Haven basketball program. Their website lists a link to a blog about the team. Check it out:

I guess if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

  1. There's a lot oder goin round about the LHU sports programs. They have a female AD who seems to strongly bias the women's teams. see
